For media- and politics-obsessed Jonathan Horowitz’ first solo exhibition in Switzerland, the artist featured important recent works such as 'The Jonathan Horowitz Show' (2000), which appropriated images, songs, and scenes from TV shows and movies to chronologically track specific moments in the artist’s life; and 'The Soul of Tammi Terrell' (2001), a tribute to the late singer using scenes from the movie 'Stepmom' (1998) featuring characters lip-syncing Terrell’s rendition of 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.' The exhibition was among the first of the artist’s solo shows, helping propel the American artist’s career in the international art scene.
Horowitz’ inquiries into media’s role in an individual’s life—whether it is in using Al Gore’s face to market his exhibition at Greene Naftali in New York (Vote Gore [2000]), or the tracking of Julia Roberts’ film career by the names of her co-stars and love interests—presented crucial new ways of understanding, digesting, and celebrating our relationship with pop culture. Building on artistic accomplishments in Pop and Conceptualism, this exhibition was a crucial address of not only American pop culture, but also its relationship to audiences abroad.
